Contributing positively to our communities and environment is so important to Talawakelle Tea Estates Limited that caring and respect have become our guiding principles. We jointly fulfill this commitment with our partners (employees), at all levels of the company, by getting involved together to help build stronger communities and conserve natural resources.

Our strong commitment towards our employees and the community has led us to complete the following ventures; Providing new self-owned housing units to the resident work force population on land provided by the Company.

Developing and upgrading Child Development Centers on our estates equipped with facilities to look after fifty children up to the age of five years, managed by staff who have received extensive training in advanced childcare and development techniques.
Every year we spend around Rs.70 million on social welfare activities, half of which covers medical and health care facilities of our worker community.

In addition we have stepped beyond our estates in serving the community by restoring hospitals in the districts where our estates are situated; i.e the renovation of the children’s ward of the Deniyaya Hospital at the cost of Rs. 600,000/- Realizing that, in a world of dwindling resources, changing weather patterns, increasingly catastrophic natural disasters, keeping things “Green” is of paramount importance, we have launched an Eco project to do what we can to protect the fragile eco-system on the up-country mountain ranges. We have now preserved all the naturally generated water resources such as water falls, springs and streams on the Great Western Estate, and completely stopped the spraying of pesticides making use of “natural-pest-controllers” like birds to control pests, nature’s way.

As a result the marshes and ravines in the area are now teeming with rare flora and fauna. From rabbits to falcons, butterflies to pond skaters wildlife and plant life have begun to thrive in numbers once again, making us determined to continue our efforts in protecting the beautiful mountain ranges.
